Python Rocket Game: Space Explorer

Rockets do not stop when you stop pushing. Plan every thrust in Python and dock without overshooting.

About this python rocket game

Space Explorer is a physics puzzle: thrust() adds speed, coast() keeps it, brake() takes it away, and the rocket keeps moving between commands. That makes even a straight line interesting — you have to count how far you will drift — and it is a natural way to meet variables (distance(), speed()), functions with inputs for repeated manoeuvres, and a while loop that brakes until you have slowed down enough.

How to play Space Explorer

  1. Each tick runs one command: thrust(), coast() or brake(); later levels add turning.
  2. Collect any crystals on the way and stop exactly on the dock — touching it at speed does not count.
  3. Asteroids end the run, so plan the route before you fly it.
  4. Fewer lines earn more stars.

All 6 levels — what each one teaches

#LevelPython ideaGoal
1Lift OffCalling functionsCollect the crystal and stop on the dock.
2Long Cruisefor loopsFly to the far dock, collecting crystals, and stop on it.
3RendezvousVariablesUse distance() to stop exactly on the dock.
4Asteroid MazeFunctions with inputsFly three hops, turning between them, and stop on the dock.
5Buoy Runif / elifFollow the buoys for 8 ticks, then brake on the dock.
6Too Fast!while loopsSlow down, reach the dock and stop on it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there real physics in the game?

Simple physics: speed carries over from tick to tick, so you plan with momentum just as in a real rocket simulation — without any formulas to memorise.

Do I need Pygame to make a rocket game in Python?

To build one yourself, Pygame or the turtle module are the usual choices. To play this one, you need nothing — the game runs Python in the page.

Is it free, and do I need to sign up?

It is free with no account. The game runs in your browser and saves your progress in this browser only.

Does it run real Python?

Yes. Your code runs on CPython compiled to WebAssembly (Pyodide) inside the page. Errors are real Python errors, and an endless loop is stopped after a few seconds instead of freezing the tab.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. On narrow screens the editor sits at the bottom of the game. For longer coding sessions on Android, the free Coding Python app has a full Python editor.
