Python Math Game: Math Island

A side-view platformer where every jump is a calculation. Get the maths right in Python and you land on the next rock.

About this python math game

Python is a calculator first, and Math Island makes that the whole game. Each gap needs a jump of exactly the right size, and the numbers come from signs, puzzles and distances that change every run — so you cannot just type the answer, you have to write the arithmetic. Along the way it covers +, *, // and %, storing results in variables, writing a function that returns a value, and checking odd and even with if.

How to play Math Island

  1. The hero moves with walk(n) and jump(n) — a jump has to match the gap exactly.
  2. Some rocks carry a sign; puzzle() gives you its number to calculate with.
  3. Type the program and run it; misjudged jumps end in the sea and the level resets.
  4. Reach the flag to finish.

All 6 levels — what each one teaches

#LevelPython ideaGoal
1First LeapMath in codeCross the two gaps and walk to the flag.
2Stepping Stonesfor loopsHop across all the pillars to the flag.
3Puzzle RocksVariablesSolve both sign puzzles to cross to the flag.
4Double TroubleFunctions that returnJump double each sign's number, three times.
5Odd or Evenif statementsRead each of the 4 signs and make the right jump.
6To the Summitwhile loopsReach the flag, however far it is.

New to these ideas? Each level pairs with a free lesson: loops, variables, functions and conditions. When you finish, try Space Explorer next.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a good Python math game for kids?

Yes — it practises times tables, halving and odd/even alongside Python, and every answer is checked by watching the jump land or miss.

What maths does it use?

Addition, multiplication, integer division (//) and remainder (%). No algebra beyond working out one number from another.

Is it free, and do I need to sign up?

It is free with no account. The game runs in your browser and saves your progress in this browser only.

Does it run real Python?

Yes. Your code runs on CPython compiled to WebAssembly (Pyodide) inside the page. Errors are real Python errors, and an endless loop is stopped after a few seconds instead of freezing the tab.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. On narrow screens the editor sits at the bottom of the game. For longer coding sessions on Android, the free Coding Python app has a full Python editor.
